Are you dreaming of a snatched, chiseled or contoured jawline?
By Dr Rachael Syvret
The perfectly taut jawline is one of the most desired facial features of the moment. Chiselled, contoured, or snatched. Whatever the term, what are our options to try and achieve this?
Jawline Surgery
This will always remain the most effective way of achieving a more defined lower face. The excess skin that is causing the jowls can be removed and the remaining skin sutured to produce a tighter more contoured jawline and neck. However, for a lot of people this is too extreme for the problem they feel they have. Most are looking to improve the appearance of the jawline and neck without the need for a general anaesthetic and the risks of a surgical procedure, including the prolonged recovery time.
Jawline topical treatments
At the other end of the spectrum you have creams and serums that can be applied to the skin. Most of these contain hyaluronic acid and increase the skins collagen and elasticity to help to tighten the skin of the jawline and neck. The benefit of topical treatments is that they are usually more budget friendly and can be applied by the person themselves in their own home. The downside is that there are lots of different brands available and results vary greatly. Choosing the correct one is critical to deliver the results you’re hoping for.

Laser therapy and CACI treatments to tighten the Jawline
There are lots of machines on the market now that can be used during a facial that help to tighten the muscles and skin of the face and neck. These are an option for people who want a bit more than home treatment with topicals can offer them, but prefer to stay away from injectables as they may deem more invasive.
Profhilo to improve elasticity in the jaw
This is one of the newer injectables on the aesthetic scene. Profhilo has one of the highest concentrations of hyaluronic acid in it compared with other topical and injectable treatments. It works at the lower cellular levels of the skin, to increase skin cell turnover and collagen production and therefore helps to improve elasticity, firmness and hydration of the skin. This can be used anywhere where the skin may need an improvement in laxity. The lower two thirds of the face and the neck are two of the most commonly used places.

Botox to shape and define jaline
Often overlooked when people think of the lower face but Botox in the masseter muscle (angle of the jaw muscle) and platysmal bands (think Deirdre Barlow) can help to shape and define the jawline. It does so by slimming the appearance of the lower face, making it look more feminine and affecting how the neck muscles sit below the chin, to allow the shape of the jaw bone to be more clearly defined.

Fat dissolving to remove ‘double chin’
Sometimes the jawline looks under defined due to submandibular fat (double chin). By having fat dissolving injections known as Aqualyx, this can help to restore the definition that had been lost by fat cells obscuring it.

Fillers
One of the most common ways currently to help define the jawline is by injection of filler. Placed in the correct position this can help to support the skin, elongate the chin where necessary and help disguise the appearance of jowls.

Threads
Dissolvable surgical threads can now be used to help lift the sagging skin of the lower face. These are very effective in achieving as close to the outcomes of surgery as possible. However, lots of patients report various side effects such as pain and lumpiness which can sometimes be long term.
So in summary; whether you are looking for changes that are major, minor or anywhere in between there are lots of options out there to suit each individuals needs and budgets. If you are not sure, it is always worth booking a free, no obligation face to face consultation, so that a full assessment can take place and a discussion regarding options can be held.
