Smokers lines are vertical lines on the upper and lower lip. In fact, they can also occur in non-smokers too. These are skin creases formed by repeated muscle movements around the mouth. We can use a combination of Dermal Fillers and/or Botulinum Toxin to correct these.

Using dermal fillers can help hydrate this area and smooth out the lines. Furthermore, putting some filler in the margin of the lip can contour the lip and even out the lines at the margin. Filler can be used to reform the cupids bow and the Philtrum’s columns (prominent lines from cupids bow to the nose). This gives a more youthful appearance. Botulinum Toxin can be used to weaken the muscles that produce the ‘O’ shape of your mouth and therefore reduce the appearance of these lines.
Effects last from 4-24 months depending on which product is used and how each individual responds. Some people degrade the filler faster than others. They are all fully biodegradable and will break down gradually over time. As the absorption times differ with individuals, how the area looks and feels is the best indicator of when a top-up is needed.
Anti-wrinkle Botox injections take between 2 days and 2 weeks to take full effect. Dermal Fillers take 3-4 days to reach their maximum effect.
What is the aftercare?
There aren’t any major activity restrictions after your treatment. You can return to work or run errands after your injections, but don’t engage in strenuous exercise for 24 hours. Flying is discouraged for a day after injections and facials discouraged for 2 weeks following treatment. It may take a few hours for the injected toxin to “settle” and take shape, so avoid touching the treated area for a few hours. Don’t lie down for four hours after treatment.

Are there side effects?
There are very few reported side effects with these products, bruising being the most common as with any injections. This is usually minimal and can be covered effectively with make up. You must mention to your practitioner if you are taking any blood thinning medications ie. aspirin or warfarin as one would be at higher risk of bruising. However, this does not mean that we cannot proceed, it just mean we will take extra care to minimise bruising.
Do you do top up injections?
The maximum effect of the anti-wrinkle injections should be seen after two weeks. If after this time, you are not satisfied with the results, a follow up appointment can be made with your practitioner and if needed, a free “top-up” injection(s) can be given. Top ups are not normally required with Dermal Filler.
Will the treatments hurt?
The anti-wrinkle injections are administered using a small, thin needle. To further minimise the discomfort felt, your practitioner will change the needle between each area. Although the treatment is therefore not pain free, it is usually very well tolerated by all clients and most refer to it as being less painful that having their eyebrows waxed for instance. Before Dermal Fillers are injected a topical anaesthetic (numbing) cream is applied to the skin. The Dermal Fillers also contain some local anaesthetic. Both of these things help to minimise the discomfort experienced during the treatment.
Do I need to do anything specific before or after my treatment?
There is nothing that you need to do prior to the treatment. After the treatment there are a few “do’s and don’ts” – this will be fully explained to you by your practitioner and a written copy of our aftercare advice will be given to you at your appointment.
