How much does tear trough filler cost?
By Dr Rachael Syvret
Before we start, let’s clear up one thing…the pronunciation! I have heard it said in so many different ways! So, it’s tear – as in what we cry, and trough – as in what pigs eat out of!
What is a trough?
A trough, if you look up the definition, is a channel used to convey a liquid, in this case that liquid is our tears! Without getting too technical; it is the area between the inner lower eye and the upper part of the cheek.
How is the pricing determined?
Now that we know exactly where the tear trough is, it is not difficult to understand how this procedure is one of the most advanced aesthetics procedures offered. Not only is it a technically difficult area to treat due to how thin the skin is, it is one of the most risky procedures too; due to the arteries in this area (including those supplying the eye!) Loss of vision is one of the most serious complications that can happen with filler injections. Whilst tear trough filler is not the only procedure that puts clients at risk of this; it is one of the higher risk procedures for it to occur.
Why am I telling you all this? Well, for one; it is important that people know the potential risk of any procedure before they undertake it, but also it links in with the title of this blog; and that is the cost of tear trough filler.

Please choose your practitioner wisely
As we can now appreciate, an experienced medical practitioner who has a great understanding of anatomy is of paramount importance in a high risk procedure such as tear trough filler. The more experience they have and medical background knowledge, will ensure that if a complication were to occur, they should be able to spot the early signs and symptoms and organise emergency treatment.
It is also important that more time is offered to this procedure; it should not be rushed. Time should be spent assessing the patient before the procedure, to ensure they are an appropriate candidate, and then time spent during the procedure itself to help to avoid complications, and deposit the right amount of filler in the right place.
It is for this reason that tear trough filler is often more expensive than other treatments such as forehead Botox. Greater complexity brings greater risk and this procedure is often priced based on such risk.
Another reason it can be more expensive is due to the advanced training required, which again is often built into the pricing structure, as only few practitioners offer this treatment.
Which filler is used for tear trough?
Until recently there was only one filler that was licensed for use in the tear trough area. Now there are two different products by two different companies; Teosyal and Restylane. I am sure there will be further filler brands that join the tear trough licensing market in the future but for now, given the limitations on product choice, this doesn’t really affect the pricing structure by aesthetic companies. Tear trough filler can be a great treatment for the right patient but again, please chose your practitioner wisely. Make sure they have experience and make sure they give you the time this procedure deserves.
