Profhilo® or fillers? That is the question!
By Dr Rachael Syvret
What is the difference between Profhilo® and fillers?
For patients seeking treatment to help to “turn back the clock” and give their skin back that youthful glow, both Profhilo® and fillers can be helpful. However, it is a common misconception that Profhilo® and fillers are the same thing. Yes, you would be right in thinking that they are based on the same ingredient – hyaluronic acid, but the consistency and the way they work, and therefore their effects are quite different.
So, what is Profhilo®?
Profhilo® is one of the newer injectables on the UK market and it is taking it by storm! Profhilo® contains a high level of concentrated hyaluronic acid. It can be used pretty much anywhere on the face or body that is suffering from dull, crepey like skin texture and fine lines that need a hydrating collagen boost. On the face, Profhilo® is injected into ten bioaesthetic points. Unlike dermal fillers that stay where they are injected, the consistency of Profhilo® is much thinner, meaning it then spreads evenly under the skin to give whole coverage of the lower two thirds of the face.
How does Profhilo® work?
Profhilo® works by increasing skin cell turnover, boosting elastin and collagen and thus giving an internal skin glow up! Think the glow of a facial that lasts! Because of the way Profhilo® works, the results take a few weeks to be seen. The first time a client has Profhilo® they undergo two treatments four weeks a part. After the initial two treatments, the client can maintain the effects of their Profhilo® by having one treatment every 3-6 months. Profhilo® is of course extremely popular in the face, but it is also one of the most popular treatments for the neck where our age often gives us away!
Why and how is dermal filler different to Profhilo®?
Dermal filler is also made from hyaluronic acid, but in lower concentrations and is a much thicker gel-like substance. Because of this consistency; filler stays where it is injected. Filler is used to plump and hydrate specific lines on the face such as the nasolabials or “smokers” lines or to contour the facial features such as the cheeks, chin and jawline.

So, in summary…
Yes, they are both made from hyaluronic acid, but in fact, that is where the similarities end. Profhilo® is not a replacement for filler, and likewise filler will not do the job of Profhilo®. They are two different treatments with two different outcomes. So, if you are looking for sculpting and contouring, then filler is unrivalled. However, if you are happy with the overall appearance of your facial features and just want an improved skin integrity, smoothing of fine lines and an overall boost in your skin’s “glow” then Profhilo® is the one for you. If you are unsure, our practitioners at Underlining Beauty would be more than happy to see you for a free face to face, no obligation consultation to discuss your goals and treatment options. We look forward to hearing from you!
