Which is the best brand of Botox?
By Dr Rachael Syvret
I often get asked which brand of Botox we use at Underlining Beauty. The serotype of botulinum toxin used aesthetically is serotype A. Of this there are numerous brands. In theory, because they all have the same active ingredient, they should all work the same. In reality however; this is not the case.
Botox brands
Botox brands are prepared for use differently and thus are not interchangeable. Depending on the brand you use, changes the volume you reconstitute the product in, and the volume of injection into the various sites.
Which brand do Underlining Beauty use?
Over the years I have tried multiple brands of Botox to see which gave the best results. For me, the answer has always been Azzalure®. In my opinion, Azzalure® tends to be effective quicker and lasts longer. Unfortunately however, we are not all the same, and one brand of Botox that might be superior for one patient, may not be the case for another.
Botox®
Botox® tends to have less “spread” than Azzalure®, which may suit some patients where they are very sensitive to the effects and precision is more important.
What is Botox?
Most brands of Botox; Botox®, Azzalure®, Dysport® all come in the same form – a powder that is then reconstituted in saline and must be kept within the cold chain at all times. More recently however, there have been two new Botox products brought to the market that do not follow this typical form. Bocouture® was brought out by the company Merz a number of years ago now. There was a major buzz surrounding the product when it was launched, as it doesn’t have to be kept in the cold chain. Obviously this makes transport and storage of products much easier. For me though sadly, the results just were not good enough. It took much longer to be effective, lots of clients returned for top ups, and many reported that their results didn’t last anywhere near as long as other brands.
Alluzience®
Hot off the press is the latest offering from Galderma (the company that make Azzalure®). Their new product “Alluzience®” joined the market a couple of months ago. This, like Azzalure®, does need to remain in the cold chain. The new feature with Alluzience® is that it comes already reconstituted with saline. It claims to be effective with 1-2 days and last on average six months, as opposed to the average of four months for the other Botox products already on the market.
Because of these features, it is more expensive to buy and Galderma recommend a higher price point for patients choosing to use it. Before considering whether to include it within our repertoire at Underlining Beauty, we thought we should test it ourselves. Although the effects did start to occur after 1-2 days, we felt it still took the full two weeks (like Azzalure®) to take full effect. With regards to the duration of action; we wait to see!
