Temple augmentation…what is it?!

Temple filler is one of our newer procedures that we offer at Underlining Beauty, and we already love it! “Temples?! Whatever next?” I hear you say! Well, I have to admit, I thought the same too when I first heard of it. But learning more has led me to concede on my own initial response.

Face shapes

The ageing face can be considered in terms of shapes.

Baby

As a baby, we are born with a very round face with big central features.

Young adult

As we grow into adolescence and a young adult; our faces become more of an inverted triangle shape. We have wide foreheads and high cheek bones and sharp, pointed jawlines and full lips.

Middle aged

As we reach our 40s and 50’s; that inverted triangle becomes more of a square shape with jowl formation beginning to show. Couple with a reduction in cheek volume, we lose that angulation of our face.

Elderly

In our later years, our faces progress to the more triangular. Our forehead and cheeks are more narrow and less full, and our lower face feels heavy and weighted.

Why does this happen?

Well, it happens due to lots of reasons. Firstly, our bones (so the actual skeleton that our skin is sitting on) starts to shrink. Our ligaments begin to have increased laxity and therefore as a result, our fat pads shift and start to fall lower in our face. And to round it all off, our skin loses its natural hyaluronic acid and collagen levels, and is therefore much less elastic.

What can be done to help?

At Underlining Beauty, we consider all our treatment options, bearing in mind the above processes that are occurring as we age. Our aim is to naturally restore the “inverted triangle” appearance of youth. And that’s where temple filler comes in!

As mentioned above, in the upper face, the forehead and the cheeks start to narrow and lose volume and the temples can actually start to form an inverted shape. By restoring this volume, we help to create the width to the upper face again and help to lift the tissues of the mid and lower face.

So, how is it done?

At Underlining Beauty, we use a cannula (a blunt ended needle) to place filler into the temple region. The cannula is inserted into the skin using a port hole made by a needle. Once this port hole has been made, the cannula can slide easily under the skin back and forwards depositing filler in the area that needs volumising. The area may bruise and can be lumpy for a few days while the filler settles with the skin. After this time, the filler integrates with the tissues and produces a nice, subtly volumised effect to the temples, and helps us in our quest for the “face of youth!”
