How does botox work and how do I decide what areas I want treated?

Botox works by preventing contraction of a muscle. As aesthetic practitioners, it is therefore imperative that we first of all understand what action the contracted muscle causes, so that we can then consider the effect of stopping this contraction from occurring.

There are four main muscles of the upper face that we tend to consider as shown on the picture above.

  • The Frontalis muscle, when contracted, causes elevation of the brows and thus the formation of horizontal forehead lines.
  • The Corrugators, Procerus and Depressor Supercilli cause a medial and downward depression of the brows, leading to frown lines and horizontal nasal lines.
  • The Orbiculares Oculi causes depression of the brows, especially laterally, which leads to crows feet formation.

By understanding these muscles and their mechanisms of action, we can translate this for our clients when discussing what their desired outcome and final result they are hoping for is.

Don’t forget that at Underlining Beauty, we offer all of our clients the opportunity for a free, no obligation consultation where we can discuss your hopes and expectations and discuss how we can best achieve them.
