The Zoom Boom

I qualified in aesthetics over 11 years ago and, wow, has the aesthetic world changed in that time! It has gone from being something that the rich and famous have done, to something that is considered general maintenance, just like getting your hair dyed or nails done.

But, what has changed the shape of the aesthetic industry the most? Covid-19! I bet you weren’t expecting that answer, or if you were, you were expecting me to talk about the fact that aesthetics business were not able to operate for months and months, and the detrimental effect that had on people’s business and their livelihoods. And, well, yes, whilst all that is true, when we did open back up…oh my gosh, was aesthetics booming!

What is the zoom boom?

This was what was known in the aesthetic industry as the “zoom boom!” We are all used to looking at ourselves, we have seen our own faces for as long as we have been alive. But what we are used to seeing is how we look when static. We are not used to seeing what we look like dynamically, when we are talking, gesticulating, listening or concentrating. The faces we pull while doing that is very different to how we look on our best side in the mirror or a camera angle.

All of a sudden the Covid-19 pandemic hit and we were all (where possible) made to work from home. Our day to day was now held over zoom and teams meetings. Well, what a different perspective this gave us all of how we looked!

“Give me alllll the injections!”

How has aesthetics changed?

As soon as the aesthetics industry was able to open our doors again, we saw an outpouring of people clambering to get an aesthetics appointment. The patient that used to have just one area of botox, suddenly wanted three areas. The patients who normally had three areas, now wanted to discuss their filler options. Being “locked” in our own homes, certainly gave everyone a new way of thinking about life and a more “if I want it, I’m having it” sort of mentality. This coupled with the fact that people had more disposable money as they hadn’t been on their usual summer holidays.

It goes without saying that the Covid-19 pandemic was an absolutely awful time. Many lost loved ones and people were impacted financially, physically and mentally. I think our country is starting to recover from the pandemic now and aesthetics has certainly more than made up for the time we were closed all thanks to the “zoom boom.”

Now is a great time to get into aesthetics!
