Aesthetics and general well being
By Dr Rachael Syvret
Aesthetics and “well-being” aren’t two phrases that we generally think that go together. In my opinion, it is still far too often considered that if you get aesthetic work done you are “vain” or “obsessed with how you look”. In so many cases, this is just not the case. Yes of course, I can’t deny that having aesthetic work done does make you “look better” but it also makes you “feel better” too!
So many of my clients sit in front of me and I ask the question “why now?”
Why have they decided that today is the day that they are going to start having aesthetic treatments? And quite often the answer I get is, “because I look in the mirror and I just don’t feel like me anymore”. When our brain tells us one thing and we feel like we haven’t aged a day, then the mirror tells us a different story, this can impact on the way we feel. It can impact on our mental wellbeing and our feeling of self-worth.
So, is that vain?
If someone looked in the mirror and felt they have put on weight and therefore decided to go on a diet and exercise more, we would be praising them, not reprimanding them for being vain. So why is this any different for someone who chooses to have aesthetic treatments carried out to help them look and feel better?
Clients so often feel the need to hide the fact that they have aesthetic work done. They often don’t tell friends, family or colleagues for fear of other people’s opinions.
Whether this is the case, or she’s had a little help from non-surgical “tweakments”, who knows? But celebrities often deny aesthetic work, perhaps too from the fear of being judged.
This judgment from other people is just not fair. Who are we to decide what is right or wrong for other people? How do we know what is going on in the individual’s personal life?
In a world where we can be anything; be kind. I hope that the stigma and the taboo around aesthetic treatments becomes something of the past. There really are bigger issues in the world other than who has had some cheek filler!
