How Do I Know If Cheek Augmentation Is Right For Me?

So let’s talk cheek augmentation! I often get asked what cheek fillers do and how they change your face. I, like so many people had my misconceptions about cheek augmentation. When I thought of it I thought of those who had over done it and had that “pillow cheek” look about them. It put me off training in this procedure as I only ever wanted to offer something I truly believed in as a positive procedure. But then I started to delve a bit further and I realised so many people have had their cheeks done; it’s just the good ones are not the obvious ones! The good ones are the “you look well but I can’t put my finger on why.” So I decided to take the plunge and do my training. This was years ago now and I have never looked back!

How can cheek augmentation improve my appearance?

Cheek augmentation can be used to enhance the face in various ways. Most obviously it can be used to give the apples of the cheeks more volume when this has been lost, helping to rejuvenate the mid face and giving it a fresher, younger appearance. Not so commonly realised though that by doing this, it can also improve the appearance of the lower face by lifting the “jowls” and making the skin of the lower third of the face look a lot more taut. Cheek augmentation can also be used to sculpt and contour the face. The female face can often be made to look more masculine if the cheeks are in line with the jaw. By adding volume laterally (to the side of the cheek bones) it can help to give an overall more feminine appearance to the face by giving more of an inverted triangle shape when comparing the cheeks to the jawline.

How is cheek filler injected?

Cheek augmentation can be done using a needle or a cannula (a blunt ended needle) or a combination of both. There is no prep needed by the client. When the client attends their appointment the skin is cleansed and marked for injection taking into consideration the front and side profile views. The injection of filler is a deep injection and therefore usually there is minimal bruising and bleeding.  However as with all aesthetic procedures, unfortunately, this risk cannot be fully mitigated and some clients may find that they do unfortunately bruise.

How long does a cheek augmentation appointment take?

The procedure itself takes about five to ten minutes, with the total appointment length being approximately 30 minutes. The filler is sculpted using the fingers to help mould the desired shape and effect.

When will I see results?

The results are seen immediately to a degree, with some further improvement over the following two weeks as the filler fully integrates within the tissues of the cheeks. As the injection is deep, there is no need for the patient to do any massage themselves over the coming days; they just need to keep the area clean and dry. Often the area can feel a little tender for a few days, normal paracetamol or ibuprofen are fine to take in this instance.

Dr Rachael’s final cheek augmentation thoughts

So can cheek filler be terrible? In my opinion – yes, if you over do it. But the right product, the right volume, used in the right place – oh cheek filler is just THE BEST!
